BREAKING NEWS: Gippsland Solar – now powered by RACV!

13 December 2019

We are delighted to inform you that Gippsland Solar is now a wholly owned subsidiary of RACV.

This development is tremendous news for our clients and staff. It allows us to retain our core values and approach to looking after our clients, but now backed up by the strong foundations and history of one of Victoria’s most trusted organisations.

I will be staying on as CEO of Gippsland Solar and RACV Solar, and my passion for this business has never been stronger. Now with the reputation and capital that RACV brings to Gippsland Solar, we look forward to making renewable and sustainable energy solutions accessible to more Victorians.

Our workforce will also remain intact. Gippsland Solar would not be where it is today without our amazing team, and our plans for expansion and growth across the country mean that our employment levels will only increase into the future. Happily, the Latrobe Valley will remain the HQ for our business into the future, and this partnership will direct millions of dollars and many more jobs into the heart of the Gippsland region. It’s a tremendous sign of confidence in the Latrobe Valley and wider Gippsland and will only strengthen the opportunities that exist within the energy transition we have already begun.

We have some incredibly exciting initiatives to announce in due course, which will transform the solar and storage market in Australia. RACV has been investing in the energy space for a number of years (trading as RACV Solar) and have already forged a strong reputation as a reliable and trusted provider of solar power and battery storage systems. This partnership is a strong signal that RACV sees a bright future in energy and the broader home services market and sees us well on the way to becoming the most trusted name in renewable energy.

All product and workmanship warranties will remain in place, and very little will change in the day-to-day operations. We will continue our focus on providing energy solutions for homes and businesses and delivering some of Australia’s largest and most complex projects.

When my wife and co-director Kelly and I founded Gippsland Solar 10 years ago, we wanted the customer to be at the centre of everything we do. We care so passionately for our clients, and this reputation for customer service is what RACV values the most in us. As a member-owned organisation, we believe RACV’s values are perfectly aligned with our own, and we look forward to a period of tremendous growth and shared values.

To everyone that has supported Gippsland Solar in the past 10 years, we are incredibly grateful. Whether you have purchased a Gippsland Solar system, recommended our business to friends and family, or advocated for us in any way, you have all contributed to our journey and strong reputation. We have thoroughly enjoyed this chapter of our story, and we can’t wait to see what the future brings.

Warm regards,
Andy McCarthy

RACV Torquay resort – powered by Gippsland Solar!

22 October 2019

We’ve just flicked the switch on one of our all-time favourite projects; an epic 510kW solar installation on the RACV Torquay Resort. In this highly exposed coastal location, we used WINAICO solar panels, which have exceptional tolerance to high winds and salt-mist.

It was the hardest project we have ever delivered, with hundreds of hours spent following the curves in the roof design, concealing cables to ensure a clean finish, and working around the accommodation and function requirements of the resort. We are so incredibly proud of our team, who battled through the winter weather and delivered a truly amazing masterpiece.

This system is the perfect complement to RACV’s rapid electric vehicle charging station, which our team installed and was launched by Lily D’Ambrosio last month. This Chargefox charging station will recharge all types of EV in 15-30 minutes, and now it will be powered by renewable energy.

It’s an immense honour to be entrusted with delivering these projects for our friends at RACV. They are showing tremendous innovation and vision in the energy space, leading the way to a future of electric vehicles, renewable energy and smart technology.

Rebates waiting periods slashed!

22 October 2019

Waiting times for Solar Victoria rebates have reduced dramatically, in fact, this month 100% of people who logged into the portal on October 1 received their rebate.

When the program first launched some customers were having to wait 3 months for rebates, now it is likely that we can process them in the month they apply.

There are several reasons behind the reduction in waiting time – changes to the program have made more rebates available,  and doubled how frequently they are released from monthly to fortnightly. These measures have helped to satisfy early demand for the rebates and reduced some of the pressure on the system.

The Solar Victoria program is comprised of a $2225 grant and $2225 interest free loan repayable over 4 years. With the combination of rebates currently available, over 50% of the system cost is covered in many cases. Incredibly, some systems now cost as little as $2000 after the loan and rebate!

Solar for Gippsland Farmer Relief!

21 October 2019

As part of our Gippsland Solar Community Fund, we were thrilled to donate and install a 10kW system (valued at $15,000!) to the amazing people at Gippsland Farmer Relief.

With over 120 volunteers providing support for our farmers during this crippling drought, a little funding goes a long way for Gippsland Farmer Relief. The last thing they wanted to spend their funding on was rising electricity bills, so this donation will allow GFR to redirect tens of thousands of dollars into the areas it is most needed.

The donation of this system was made possible through the generous support by REC solar, who donated their premium n-peak solar panels, and our good friends at Fronius, who donated the 10kW Symo inverter.

All other components and installation were donated through our Community Fund, which has reinvested over $800,000 in support across Gippsland in the last 5 years.

Our Retail Manager Mitch met Melissa Ferguson from GFR during this years’ Gippsland Community Leadership Program, which they are both taking part in. It was a great initiative by Mitch to drive this project, highlighting the very leadership we want to see within the business.

Thanks to everyone who made this donation possible, and to our valued clients, who keep supporting Gippsland Solar and allowing this Community Fund to grow every year.

More Solar Victoria rebates, but they won’t last long

28 August 2019

With the problematic introduction of the Solar Victoria rebate, we’ve seen a lot of noise in the media about what this means for solar companies. We’ve seen statements such as ‘d-day for the solar industry’, ‘the death of the Victorian solar industry’ and more.

Naturally, our existing and prospective clients have been contacting us, wanting to know how Gippsland Solar has been affected, and what our future looks like with these challenges.

We are happy to confirm that we are not just surviving, but thriving! It has been a challenging few months, but our preparation and planning has enabled us to secure a rebate for many dozens of our clients.

Our approach of being organized and ready for this new program when it opened has meant that we were able to secure an allocation for dozens of our clients.

The recent announcement that Solar Victoria will add another 23,000 rebate this year is great news for consumers, but demand is still expected to be much higher than the rebate allocations. If you are looking to secure this rebate, contact us ASAP for a chat about your options.

Many of our (so far unsuccessful) applicants are happy to wait until the first of next month to secure their position, knowing that we will give them the best chance of success. Others have given up on the Solar Victoria rebate altogether, and decided to press ahead and enjoy the savings now rather than wait in the face of uncertainty.

Our decision a few years ago to diversify into solar for business, commercial installations, EV charging stations and microgrid projects has enhanced our long-term stability. We have several months of commercial work ahead of us, and plenty of other non-rebate work.

We recognize that it is a tough time for many residential focused solar companies, but for existing and prospective Gippsland Solar clients, you can be sure that we are not downsizing. Our business was strong before this unexpected rebate came along, and it has not affected our vision or direction.

Gippsland Solar will continue to power ahead into the future, providing peace of mind for you, the client, and secure employment for these wonderful people that lead us every day.

Solar for Hospitals

28 August 2019

Our commercial team at Gippsland Solar have just put the finishing touches on this 500kW system for Wonthaggi Hospital, completing a 12-month rollout of installations across eastern Victorian health services.

At the time this was our largest contract; a 1.5MW portfolio of solar delivered across 8 hospitals and health services across Omeo, Orbost, Maffra, Wonthaggi, Sale and San Remo.

The project also included the largest installation on a hospital in Australia – a whopping 752kW system at Central Gippsland Health Service in Sale!

These were some of the toughest and most complex sites we have ever worked on, and our team had to tailor every project schedule to meet the operational requirements of each hospital.

Not only were these projects rolled out seamlessly, but we have benefited greatly from the experience, investing heavily in new processes and systems that have taken our commercial installation team to a new level.

We’ve also picked up a couple of new permanent employees from the hospitals as we rolled out the installations, further underlining the benefits of using a local provider for regional projects.

Thanks to the team at Health Purchasing Victoria for entrusting Gippsland Solar to deliver this rollout. We are very proud of our achievements, and the financial and environmental benefits that will flow to each health service for decades to come.

Two engineers in the house

28 August 2019

What’s better than employing an in-house electrical engineer? Employing two of them!

We are thrilled to welcome qualified electrical engineers, Dushan and Angelo to the Gippsland Solar commercial team.

Dushan has come to Australia on a four-year skilled migration visa, and has designed, delivered and commissioned a number of 2-3MW projects (including Colombo Airport), and also a complete Micro-grid system on the Maldives.

Dushan has moved from Sri Lanka to Traralgon to further his career, after we were recommended as the commercial solar company of choice in Australia, and is settling in nicely in the Latrobe Valley.

Angelo has been working in the Australian industry for a while now, and brings a high level of experience delivering some of the largest systems across the Victorian network. He has actually delivered some of our projects through a highly respected consulting company, and they are both wonderful assets to the workforce (and top blokes to go with it).

Not only will they take our projects to a new level, but they are working with our two electrical engineers in training, nurturing their development as we deliver larger systems every month.

This significant investment is a sign of our confidence in the long-term GipSol business model. By doubling down (pardon the pun!) on two of the industry’s most highly regarded engineers, as well as investing in AutoCad and 3D drone modelling software, we are now able to deliver the most complex and challenging projects within our workforce.

Reclaim heat pump – hear the difference!

28 August 2019

The term ‘heat pump’ has been a dirty word around Gippsland for a number of years. Many heat pumps have had issues with noise and reliability, because in our opinion, these systems really weren’t designed for our climate. For this reason, we didn’t have confidence in recommending heat pumps in Gippsland.

Until now.

The Reclaim C02 heat pump has been designed from the ground up for our region, with higher efficiency, minimal noise (37dB to be exact), and some smart controls to take advantage of excess solar power. By storing excess solar power in hot water, it is also a great alternative to battery storage, at a far lower cost.

We have installed dozens of systems across the region, and the results are everything we had hoped for and more. One client has seen their daily hot water consumption drop from ~13kWh per day to around 2.5kWh, and mostly fed by excess solar power.

If you are looking for a reliable, quiet, and cost-effective way to heat your water, this is the product for you.

Solar Powered Penguins coming soon!

13 June 2019

The Gippsland Solar team are proud to announce that they have just put the finishing touches on an epic 200kW system at the new Phillip Island Nature Park’s Penguin Parade Visitors Centre.

Not only did we pull out all stops to complete this project for Kane Constructions on a tight deadline, but we have been nominated by Kane for a sub-contractor Excellence Award at their gala evening in August.

We used 666 x Trina Solar mono PERC solar panels, and of course, our favourite Fronius Australia inverters.

It was a privilege to again work with our friends at Phillip Island Nature Park, where we have also installed a 100kW system at the Nobbies Centre just down the road.

We are extremely grateful to our project managers, installers and admin team, for delivering such a prestigious, yet challenging project to the highest standard.

You can check out the spectacular new Penguin Parade Visitor Centre, and say hi to some of the feathered locals, when the centre opens in November 2019.
